Alert the press! After a long awaited arrival, Canva has finally rolled out a feature that’s been requested by its users for yearsthe Curved Text feature.

Until the November 2020 rollout, it’s been a pretty tedious process to try and achieve the curved text effect in Canva (which required complicated workarounds). But now that’s a thing of the past!

This feature, which is available for both the free version of Canva and Canva Pro, means that you can now easily curve your text to use for brand logos or any other design graphics (no Photoshop or fancy apps required).

If you’re ready to level up your design skills, then read along to learn how to easily curve text in Canva with this new time-saving feature.

Getting started in Canva

If you don’t have one already, make sure you sign up for a Canva account. You can create amazing designs with the free version, but I personally recommend opting for Canva Pro if you plan on creating a lot of graphics for your blog or website.

It’s incredibly affordable (even for small business owners), and you get unlimited access to premium stock photos, fonts, graphics and other design features. And if you click that little image below, you can take Canva Pro for a spin, completely free for 30 days!

1. Create your design

Go to your Canva home page and click ‘Create a design’.

For this example, you can go ahead and click “Instagram Post” (or type in the dimensions ‘1080px X 1080px’) as that’s a good starting place for a simple square logo or social graphic.

2. Add a text box to your design

Click the “T” key on your keyboard which will place a text box in your template.

Type out the message that you’d like to use the Curve Text feature on.

For this example, you can go ahead and add two text layers:

  • One text layer for the logo/company name at the top of the curved text circle

  • And one text layer for the company slogan at the bottom of the circle

Feel free to switch up the style of your text (i.e. change to a different font, use uppercase letter, adjust spacing etc), but you can also make adjustments after applying the feature as well.

3. Apply ‘Curved Text’ feature

Click the “Effects” feature in your Canva toolbar.

You will see an option that says “Curved” (it should be the last option in the Effects panel). Click this and your text will now have a beautiful curved style.

4. Make any adjustments to your curved text

You can now adjust the angle of your curved text (i.e. how curved you want your letters to be).

  • Drag the slider to the right to create a circle of text with the text facing the ‘outside’ of the circle (i.e. the top of the circle)

  • Drag the slider to the left to create a circle of text with the text facing the ‘inside’ of the circle (i.e. the bottom of the circle)

And that’s it! You can now reformat your text, change your branding colors or fonts & play around with the adjustments until you feel satisfied with your design.

5. Export your design

If you want to export the file as a logo with a transparent background, you’ll need to be signed up for the Canva Pro plan.

If you’re already on Canva Pro, you’ll just need to make sure that you remove any background image/color from your design template before exporting, or set the current background color to white.

  • Click the Download (or Publish) option in the top right-hand corner of your editor (located next to the share button).

  • You’ll see a “File type” dropdown menu. Click the option that says “PNG”

  • Now make sure to check off “Transparent background”, otherwise the design will export with a white background

  • Click download, and your design will be ready to share to your website, social media accounts or wherever you plan on using it!

PS: Once you download the file, you should see a transparent image like the one below.
